Tucked down a narrow lane off Hanamikoji in Gion, Junidan-ya Honten is often called the birthplace of shabu-shabu. The name comes from the first owner, Seinosuke, a Kabuki fan who loved Chushingura’s “eleven acts”—and hoped visitors would come here for a delicious “twelfth” after a night at Minamiza. Shabu-shabu is cooked in the original copper pot he designed, swishing prime Kuroge Wagyu sirloin and dipping it into the house’s fragrant sesame sauce. Look around as you eat: sliding doors feature a tiger print by Munakata Shiko, private rooms display works by potter Kawai Kanjiro, and antiques mingle with folk crafts.
